Mistakes in cover letters

The cover letter includes information about your qualifications and motivation to work in the position of your interest. It's a kind of advertising. It can be your passport to a future career so it's recommended to spend some time on it.
How to make the employer notice you?
We want to draw your attention to common mistakes that appear in cover letters.

Contact information missing. Even if you included this information in your CV it should also be included in a cover letter. The lack of this information prevents a contact from your potential employer. It is also not recommended to use a business phone number. It might change and it won’t be impossible for anyone to contact us.  We should avoid giving e-mail addresses that do not sound professional e.g.: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it It’s better to have a new one e.g.: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Current date missing: We often forget to include a correct date  which may be perceived as a lack of diligence and accuracy.

The right addressee of the letter:  Always address the letter to the right person to whom it is directed.

Reference number missing: The lack of information which position our application concerns. We should always include the name and reference number of the actual position that we apply for. Or we should clearly specify in the letter which professional field is of our interest so that the employer directs the right job offers to us.

Using templates for cover letters: Do not copy cover letters from the Internet. A cover letter must be prepared carefully and separately for each company to which you apply. Then it can truly communicate who we are which is needed to present oneself right in front of an employer.

Writing about oneself as of a great professional without proving it in the solid data:
Prove your achievements, present what you can be proud of and what you can prove.

Writing about interests that do not have anything to do with the position we apply for:
Writing about interests outside of the field of our professional interests might suggest your professional immaturity as a employee, e.g. an accountant who is interested in fashion designing.

Focusing on one’s own limits. We should never write that we can’t do something, we don’t know about something or we need to learn more. Then we doubt our abilities. If you don’t appreciate yourself an employer may not notice you. We shouldn’t however overrate our abilities, e.g.: I didn’t decide about the structure of collection but I would not how to handle that.

A cover letter length. A cover letter should not be longer than one page, A4 format. The cover letter presents itself well if it fits one page.

A cover letter format. A cover letter written in a format other than a standard Microsoft Word document. By sending a letter in a format other than a Word document you have to reckon the fact that the employer may have a problem with opening the file.

Welcome note and signature missing: At the end of a cover letter we must include a standard phrase such as: Yours sincerely, sincerely etc. We should sign the cover letter in hand writing.

No confidentiality clause: if the clause is included in the job offer we must include it, e.g.:
I hereby agree to the processing of my personal data for recruitment purposes and adding it to the data base of HaeR-Doradztwo Personalne z siedzibąw Tarnowie, ul. Paderewskiego 6, in order to present me with employment offers pursuant to the Personal Data Protection Act of 29 August 1997 (Dz. U. z 2002 r. Nr 101, poz. 926 z poź. Zm.). I admit the right to have access to my data and introduce corrections.

However, if the company does not provide its own clause then we must add a general clause:
I hereby agree to the processing of my personal data for recruitment purposes  pursuant to the Personal Data Protection Act of 29 August 1997 (Dz. U. z 2002 r. Nr 101, poz. 926 z poź. Zm.).

Requests: It is not recommended to include in a cover letter requests for a positive consideration of the letter. It is not taken well by employers.
